Me with my cake.

Last night I went with some friends to Bakies in Mount Pleasant and we learned how to decorate cakes. It was so much fun and the owners, Gail, Stephanie and Stephanie’s husband, were super nice. While we learned how to decorate we all visited and found out that the owners met through mutual friends awhile ago and after a time they decided to open a bakery together. The result was Bakies.

This was Gail’s “teaching tin” to show us how to decorate with frosting.

Gail was our instructor. She has a degree in culinary arts but she loves baking and decorating the most. She was a good teacher and from her we learned how to cut and level our cakes; create a ditch in the bottom tier of the cake for filling; how to stack our cakes, put on the first layer of frosting that shows all the crumbs; then apply the second, clean layer of frosting; and then . . .

My friend Aly’s cake got some special treatment with edible glitter.

More creative cakes and palm trees.

I couldn’t take pictures during the class because, as you can imagine, I had frosting all over my hands most of the time but I wanted to show y’all the finished products.

The scene at the end of our decorating fun.

If you are looking for something fun to do, and good to eat, you should check this place out because even if your cake looks funny after you decorate it, it will still taste delicious. If you would rather just eat a cake or some other Bakies creation, stop by. They do have baked goods for sale throughout the day.

Their address is 426 Coleman Blvd, Swt C, Mt. Pleasant, SC  29464 and the phone number is: 843-452-9778. The class was $25 and in addition to the cake and the lesson, we also received three pastry tips, a coupler, and a pastry bag to do our own decorating at home.

Lots of fun and yummy treats! Make sure to check Bakies out this weekend or some other time.

  1. Thanks, Christie, for the great blog about our cake decorating class. We are so glad you all had a good time – and accomplished some good decorating, too! We hope you all will come back for Bakies 102 – when we figure out just that that will be! Gail and Stephanie at Bakies
