The Wolf Gift

I like Brad Pitt, Christian Slater and Tom Cruise but Tom Cruise is no Vampire Lestat. I personally loved the book and read that series, Rice’s Mayfair Witches series as well as some of her other books like, “The Feast of All Saints,” “Cry to Heaven” and “The Mummy.”

Well, Anne Rice is out with a new series. First in the line up is, “The Wolf Gift.” Now, I am a sucker for stories about vampires, witches, werewolves, faries, etc. However, my preference for the supernatural aside, two weeks after I finished reading “The Wolf Gift,” I find myself still thinking about the book and imagining where Rice will next take this story.

The tale opens with a young man who even though he has a job as a reporter, a nice girlfriend and a loving family, he is a bit adrift. Enter a well traveled, older woman with a family home that she is finally selling twenty years after her uncle went missing under mysterious circumstances. In a violent moment, the young protagonist finds himself the recipient of this “wolf gift” and as with any good story, a mystery of this gift’s origin soon unfolds and you start to wonder if this guy is going to make it into the next book.

I won’t spoil the fun. You will have to read it to see if he survives the gift and lives on into Book 2. Once you start reading you will also be introduced to a rich cast of characters whose back stories and future wanderings I am eager to learn about as Rice unfolds this new world as only she can. It is a different tone than her other books but I think she still has a gift where writing is concerned and I can’t wait for “The Wolves of Mid-Winter,” due out December 2013.

Happy Monday and happy reading!
