Upside Down or Right Side Up?

That is a butter dish. My butter dish to be precise. See the cute cow? See how she is partially covered by the butter?

Pictured as you see it there, I think the dish is upside down. However, both The Southern Gent and my mom believe that that is the correct way for the dish to be used.

I am taking a chance by showing it to you in this position first. You will automatically be predisposed to viewing that as its correct orientation.

I am confident though in my opinion that as pictured here, the dish is right side up. Cute cow is no longer obscured!

So confident in fact that I show you the proper placement second.

Who is with me? Which way is right side up?

  1. Old Besse sure is cute, but what out functionality? A hungry man needs his butter dish to function without delay.

  2. And, if butter starts to melt, especially in that Southern heat, it will not spill over the shallow topside. And I do see the cow on top, and it even weirdly shows up with the butter on the other side. If it weren’t so perfectly rectangular, this might not work. My butter dishes often are smaller on the top side, which makes it impossible to balance. Deep, Christie!

  3. I have the exact same butter dish. I always had it with the cow up because like you I assumed the cow was supposed to be showing but then I kept getting told I had it was upside down so I gave in a turned it around. I don’t know though I still feel like the cow should be on top.
