Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Sunday, November 11th is the 19th running of the Charleston Cup. On Friday there will be a black-tie Race Ball with live music, food and a special race preview. The Southern Gent and I were lucky enough to be able to go to this last year. It was a good time!
On Sunday morning riders, trainers, and owners compete for purses totaling $50,000. The horses that compete are a breed called thoroughbreds and are three years of age or older.
There will be steeplechases and flat races. The speed of the flat races is exciting and the jumps in the steeplechase add another element of challenge.
Gates open at 9:00 a.m. and paddock call is at 12:00 noon.
Between nine and noon though there is tailgating. This is me last year helping to set up a friend’s tailgating area.
You can also walk around and visit and see the fun outfits people wear.
I loved this guys spurs!
Once the races start, make sure you find a good sweet table to partake of and . . .
that you bring a couple of dollar bills for some friendly wagering.
In between races, some people even catch forty winks.
Make sure you don’t slumber too long though, you could miss the one that got away.
Or a potential winner.
You do not have to be a horse person to appreciate these races and you don’t have to wear a pink suit either. Just come out and enjoy the fun, food, sights and of course, the races.
